This section describes how to develop case studies especially adapted for training workshops in gender analysis and forestry by using rapid rural appraisal (RRA). It includes a selection of RRA tools which may be useful in conducting field research. The section has been written for researchers who are already familiar with the process of rapid rural appraisal.
These examples of tools for developing case studies for training are intended for use in a process which is as articipatory as possible, although it is recognized thatusing RRA tools alone does not lead to long termparticipatory development in the case study area. Despitethis, using the RRA tools can be a catalyst toempowerment of rural women and men becauseopportunities are created, and arise, for them to voicetheir concerns and priorities; therefore, these tools shouldbe seen as part of a larger process, not a substitute for it.
